Suspending Polls — Accepting Requests for Art Critique

This is the end of the poll era. Let’s seal it in our memories forever and ever, and move on.

What happened?

First, I wasn’t entirely OK with the idea in the first place. Every artist has the right to feel special and unique, and being on a poll may compromise that. I asked myself “Would I be willing to participate in a poll?” and I wasn’t so sure. Maybe — with some convincing.

Second, I consider artists not elected by the poll equally worthy. However, there’s the factor of elimination in the whole process, and though I thought I would eventually return to those artists, the prospect seemed just too remote. I would create a long list and too much expectation — something I’m not prepared to deal with.

Third, I think I may have climbed too high up the tree. After all, I’m not a professional critic. Making polls for a non-professional service, even though free, and including professional artists in them is an unbalanced solution.

So what happens now?

Courtesy of featured artists of the last few weeks, I have a list of interesting artists which I would like to review.

Also, I am inviting artists to submit requests for a critique — just like in the old days when the website was on blogger. Click here to fill in the form. It’s a simple submission form and your email will never be shared. Or, contact me by email instead.

I am pleased to announce that the next reviewed artist is going to be Alvin Richard.

I would like to thank everybody for participating and taking the time to look at the artists’ blogs and websites.

Alvin Richard does fascinating things with light and color, and I will try to investigate how in the upcoming commentary. Stay tuned for the next review!

Introducing Participants — Poll 2

Two artists who participated in Poll 1 were nominated once again, and I am more than happy to comply. The third artist is Alvin Richard.

I started thinking that if a certain artist gets nominated three times, he should get automatically to the top of the list and be the next reviewed painter.

So these are the artists participating in Poll 2, which is planned to close on the 5th of March.

I am pleased to announce that Todd Ford is the next reviewed artist.

Congratulations!

He won by a very wide margin, which leads me to suspect that a network of supporters and fans was involved in the voting.

I think that it is a good idea to ask friends to vote, because, first, it brings traffic to Art & Critique, which always makes me happy and, second, eventually gives a hopefully worthwhile exposure to the elected artist.

I actually believe that the best way to improve voting results would be for participants to announce about the poll on their respective blogs. I feel uncomfortable soliciting links, but this would be a mutual link exchange — and with an actual purpose behind it.

Anyway, back to work.

I have not yet worked out a complete format, but it boils down to this: the elected artist will be the next reviewed painter on Art & Critique.

One possible way to proceed would be that votes for the two other artists would accumulate so that when nominated once more, they would stand a higher chance to be elected. That way, being featured on Art & Critique would eventually be only a matter of time.
